Houston, we have a problem. Too many satellites, not enough capacity in the coming years. Recent research and industry forecasts vary widely, but they consistently point to a massive surge in satellite launches over the next ~5 years (to ~2030)—driven mainly by large Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations. This unprecedented volume of hardware creates a critical bottleneck: the global demand for launch slots is rapidly outstripping available supply.
The good news: SEOPS has anticipated this crunch and secured launch capacity in advance. We are now booking rides on our Waymaker program to LEO/SSO and our Darkstar program to GTO. Our Launchlock program allows customers to lock in a launch window up to 3 years in advance. The need could not be more urgent: smallsat operators should lock down a launch ASAP or risk getting bumped far down the road.
With estimates ranging from 20,000 to 70,000 satellites needing to be launched in the coming years, far exceeding all previous decades combined, there will be extreme pressure on current launch infrastructure. Even conservative models imply an order-of-magnitude increase over today’s ~12,000 active satellites. Addressing this launch capacity deficit is now a strategic priority to prevent multi-year deployment delays for both commercial and sovereign missions.
What does this mean for Europe?
The European small satellite market in particular is entering a phase of accelerated expansion, with projections indicating significant growth in both market value and technological complexity through the end of the decade. This momentum is underpinned by a combination of sovereign security needs, climate monitoring goals, and a thriving commercial ecosystem.
The growth of the market is being propelled by several high-impact factors:
The good news here is there are new launch vehicles coming online out of Europe as well, and SEOPS is already working with many of them. While they can take on some of the demand, it still may not be enough.
Within Europe, specific nations are emerging as manufacturing and innovation hubs:
This regional growth reflects a structural shift toward standardized, mass-manufactured satellite platforms and more resilient, sovereign-backed space architectures. This is great news–but will mean even more demand for launches.
A Proactive Solution to the Capacity Crunch
SEOPS anticipated the growing need for launch capacity and has proactively secured confirmed capacity on both domestic and international rideshare missions through 2028 and beyond, as well as fully dedicated missions to meet this demand. We provide reliable access to LEO, GTO, and custom orbits on the world’s most proven launch vehicles. We’ve got a dedicated launch to GTO called Darkstar booking now for 2028, check it out. Our Waymaker program will take customers to SSO and midinclination Orbits. Our LaunchLock™ program serves as the best hedge against the supply crunch, offering maximum flexibility with guaranteed launch windows secured up to three years in advance.
But we are not just concerned about capacity: we strive to be the leader in comprehensive space logistics, build programs that comprise the “access layer” to space – from integration (including non-compliant payloads) to deployment systems to on-orbit tracking through our partnership with Digantara.
The wave of launch needs is only growing – partner with SEOPS, the industry’s most trusted launch service provider, for peace of mind and launch certainty for your mission.
Munich/Paris, 15 September 2026 – Isar Aerospace has signed a Multiple Launch Service Agreement with SEOPS for five dedicated launches. The missions will be launched with Isar Aerospace’s launch vehicle Spectrum between 2028 and 2030 from the company’s dedicated launch complex at Andøya Space and Spaceport Nova Scotia. The contract brings the 2028 manifest of …
